On March 27, top management of LADWP met with STNC Region 1 Rep. Pat Kramer and STNC Animal Issues Chair Dana Stangel to discuss a request (unanimously approved by the STNC board) that a protocol be established for animal rescues off power equipment in the City of Los Angeles. Joining them for this meeting were: DWP Director, Power Transmission & Distribution Division Andrew Kendall; DWP Director, Intergovernmental Affairs & Community Relations Winifred Yancy; Fire Captain Hamel of S-T’s Fire Station, and Board of Neighborhood Commissioners’ Lydia Grant.
The meeting was set up as an effort to alleviate problem animal rescues off power poles like the one that took place in Sunland last November. The letter requested that DWP allow the Department of Animal Services’ Specialized Mobile Animal Rescue Team (SMART) to assist whenever an animal was trapped on their equipment. The SMART team has special training to handle wild and frightened animals and has been working with Animal Services since 2008.
At the March 27 meeting between DWP and the STNC reps, a productive discussion took place resulting in an assurance from the DWP reps that the SMART team would be called for future rescues. By working together, this will ensure a safer outcome for both the city workers and the animals.
By initiating this meeting with DWP’s top management, your Sunland Tujunga Neighborhood Council was able to initiate what may very well become a citywide policy to improve the health and safety of local wildlife and domestic animals — and the humans who often risk their lives to perform these rescues.
The STNC meets for its next monthly board meeting on May 13, at 6:30 p.m. at North Valley City Hall, 7747 Foothill Boulevard, Tujunga. Food and refreshments are provided for stakeholders.
The next STNC Animal Issues Committee meeting will be held on May 26 at 7 p.m. at North Valley City Hall. Come for an interesting presentation by one of our animal rescue experts.
